Welcome to the first-ever Houston Landing newsletter!

Well, this is historic. We know, we know — that claim is always thrown around. But really, it’s not every day a nonprofit news organization in Houston starts up with a mission to provide essential journalism.

So here we are. In today’s newsletter, we want to tell you about our origin story and explain our name (if y’all are really interested, some day we might tell you about all the names we rejected —  think of a shrub!)

We’re also going to introduce you to our columnist, Maggie Gordon, who we knew was just a bit different when several years ago we saw her write first drafts of a 15,000-word story BY HAND!

This is how we got started. But it’s just the beginning.

The Houston Landing is launching today.

We heard you loud and clear. You told us in a series of surveys and meetings more than a year ago what you wanted in local journalism for the Houston region. More accountability reporting. News from our suburbs. Ask questions on your behalf.

We plan to deliver.

That’s why we hired people like Alex Stuckey, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who is one of the best investigative reporters in the country; Marie De Jesús, an award-winning photojournalist and president of the National Press Photographers Association; and Monique Welch, a digital journalist who made her mark in Houston covering trending news with unique, deeply reported stories.

We have a lot of important work ahead of us. Our vision and mission are ambitious but deserving of Houston.

We really would love for you to join our journey. You can start by reading about our founding and the story behind our name.

A true Houston love story

Houston Landing Columnist Maggie Gordon

Maggie Gordon landed in Houston in May 2015 after a sleepless 27-hour drive from her family’s farm in New York. It was the sixth state she’d moved to in her 20s, and she traded off shifts at the wheel with her ever-patient father who’d promised her many moves ago to see every new city she lived in.

Now it was Houston’s turn. Crowded into a too-small hatchback with her father, her dog and her cat, Maggie figured this move would be like the others: A temporary stop (that’s what they all think!) on the way to whatever came next as she built her journalism career.

But then she fell in love — both with this city and a rocket scientist who called it home and taught her how to do the same. In Maggie’s introduction as Houston Landing’s columnist, she shares her story. In the weeks to come, she wants to share yours.
